Are You Embarrassed When Potential Clients Say, "Do You Have More Information About Your Business?"
WOW—and Attract Your Target Market—With an Effective One Page Description of Your Business
Have you ever been at a networking event and someone very excitedly asked you for more information about your business? You found yourself fumbling and apologizing for only having something second rate to give them. It is embarrassing when your marketing writing is not first rate. It gives a very poor impression of your professionalism.
Every time you get that red faced feeling again, you might make a vow to fix your problem. You’re so busy with your business though that it simply never seems to be a good time to work on the writing for marketing your business. Then, you are caught again without a polished piece of marketing writing. You get that sinking feeling while you’re thinking, "This is costing me revenue and new clients." You just don’t seem to be able to put aside the time to write. When you do try to get started, you’re stymied as to what to write, or not fully confident about your marketing writing skills.
End That Embarrassment Forever!
Can you imagine how differently you will feel when you can answer that question with confidence and enthusiasm—and a great piece of marketing material? You’ll feel proud when prospects glance at what you’ve given them and comment, "This looks great!" It’s even more fun to watch them start to read, even though you’re still in front of them! You’ll know you’ve hit “Marketing Gold” when they want to be sure they have your web site address so they can learn even more. Isn’t it time to buckle down and do that writing for marketing your business?
Create a Compelling One Sheet That Attracts Clients
Your most powerful solution is a one page description of your business. Note: This is what Robert Middleton calls an Executive Summary. You may think, "One page, that’s easy!" However, it’s a lot more challenging than it first sounds. It’s very common to prepare five to ten versions of this marketing writing and not be totally happy with any one of them.
The hardest part of writing for marketing your business is to discipline yourself to write only one page. We all feel we could talk nonstop about our business for hours. The next biggest difficulty is to write in such a way that it compels your target market to want to know more. The key is not to overload them with details at their first request for information, but to entice them into wanting to know more.
Your best technique for getting readers to want more information after you give them your one sheet, is to make sure that your marketing writing is client focused. Your writing for marketing the business describes the problem they are looking to solve from the viewpoint of the suffering they experience. You then illustrate the solution from the viewpoint of a delighted, and satisfied client who is now free of that issue.

Step One—You Immediately Receive a One Sheet Tool
Once you have paid, you receive a One Sheet tool designed to help you put together a first draft of a one sheet in the shortest amount of time. This tool is based on the marketing writing principles in Robert Middleton’s Executive Summary concept, but has been developed much more robustly.
You can take this template and answer the questions or cut and paste existing content from your marketing materials or current web site. It makes it easy for you to do the writing for marketing your business. The questions are probing, and elicit deeper responses than you might get on our own. You take all the material you accumulate using the template and write up your first draft of your marketing writing for your one sheet.
- You send the draft to me well in advance of our call.
- We set up our first appointment.
- I review the document (approximately 15 minutes).
Step Two—We Have Our First Phone Session (90 Minutes)
We have a 90 minute phone conference where we work our way through the seven steps to creating a Whiz Bang One Sheet. This is fun, exciting, and often opens up new ideas for your business. You’ll find that this way of writing for marketing your business to be extremely stimulating. Almost always, clients come away from the session with an expanded vision of their business and new potential services and products. Definitely, what we will do though is to create very strong content for the first draft marketing writing of your one sheet.
While we are working together on the phone, I am typing into the document you have sent me. As we work, I do the writing for marketing your business in your "voice". I "try out" concepts, phrases and language for your review as we work. We work together collaboratively to create a finely drawn "snapshot" of your business that is irresistably attractive to exactly your target market.
After the call, I send you the following:
- The unedited notes from the call
- The MP3 of the call
Step Three—I Write a Final Draft of Your One Sheet
After the session, I spend two hours writing and polishing our ideas and concepts and distilling them down into a professional final draft. Yahoo! You don’t have to do the marketing writing!
- I send you the following:
- The final draft
- A Change Request Form where you can record any changes you propose
- We make an appointment for next phone session.
Step Four—You Review The Draft and Write Down Any Changes You Want
I send the first draft to you to read and you either approve whole heartedly or provide information on the Change Request Form about the changes you’d like. Inevitably, there is marketing writing that doesn’t feel "quite right", but it’s usually fairly minor. Doesn’t matter. I want to have clients who are 100% satisfied with their writing for marketing their business. You need to write down the details of requested changes, send them to me, and let me make revise the marketing writing.
- You send me the Change Request Form with enough time for me to review it before our session.
- I review the requested changes (approximately 15 minutes).
Step Five—We Have Our Last Session to Fine Tune Any Changes (One Hour)
We have a one hour phone conversation about desired changes to your marketing writing. We go over your concerns and I offer potential language changes. We get these fine tuned until it absolutely represents the writing for marketing your unique business. We "nail down" what will attract your target market and compel them to insist on getting even more information from you about your business. As we work together, I’m typing this new text into the document.
After the call, I send you the following:
- The unedited notes from the call
- The MP3 of the call
Step Six—I Revise the One Sheet and Send You the Final Copy of Your Marketing Writing
I make all the changes we’ve decided on and create a clean final copy of your writing for marketing the business. It usually doesn’t take me long from this point to finalize your one sheet. We’re clear on what you want to say. Most of the marketing writing is done by this point. Typically, it’s just a matter of getting a clean final version done and sent to the client. You receive this shortly after our call.
