Precision Target Market
First, You Must Precisely Target Your Market
You can’t attract the right prospects and clients until you have precisely identified your target market. Most of the marketing problems that small service businesses experience are the result of imprecise definition of the target market. When you don’t know exactly who you want to work with, your marketing materials are not successful. They do not attract clients, or they don’t predictably deliver revenue to your business. You don’t get inquiries from your web site. You don’t know how or where to access your market.
Your Target Market Is the Most Critical Aspect of Your Marketing
How Can You Hit a Target (Market) You Don’t Aim For?
Your entire marketing program is solidly founded on a clear, definite, realistic target market. Slight changes in your target market can have a profound impact on the financial results your business experiences. Changes in your target can transform a difficult marketing effort into more easily closed sales and more predictable revenue.
Some Target Market Issues
If your business is bogged down in mediocre (or no) results, and your sales are pathetic, it may be that your target market is the real problem. Here are some possibilities to consider:
- You may be pursuing a difficult market where it’s hard to close sales.
- Perhaps your target market is not realistic—maybe even a fantasy. Your target exists only in your mind.
- You might be aiming at a market where your background is not as convincing as that of your competitors. Prospects are not "wowed" when they review your "About Us" information.
- Perhaps the worst though is the general, fuzzy "EVERYBODY is my market" type of target. When was the last time you were attracted by marketing aimed at everybody? It doesn’t work!
Wouldn’t You Rather Have These Experiences?
Instead, You Could Have. . .
Instead of a difficult marketing and sales cycle, here is what you could expect to get after completing the Precision Target Marketing session:
- A Final, Fully Fleshed Out Written Target Market—You will get content for your Who We Work With page of your web site, and for other marketing materials. This service will probably not provide the full content for your Who We Work With page, but it will definitely provide you the major Target Market content that you need.

- You know who they are and what problems they have that you solve.
- You know who you want to work with and who you no longer wish to work with.

This is the "bottom line" of all our discussions. I will consistently bring you back to analyzing whether or not a market will or can be profitable for you.
- "Reality Testing" On Your Target Market—Typically, most clients have plenty of ideas for their market, but a lot of those ideas won’t bring the desired revenue. We analyze these ideas and select the best for you to incorporate into your business.

They KNOW that you can deliver on your promises. They say, "yes" to your marketing material.
- Final Copy for Your "Who We Work With" Web Page—You get a written target market description that you can use as a solid start for your "Who We Work With" web page, business executive summary and other marketing materials.
- Target Market Tool—This tool provides a method to help you sharply define and refine your target market. It helps you delve deeply and consider many facets of the market you want to target.
- Consultant Review and Analysis Of Your Target Market Before Our Phone Session—In preparation for our first phone session, you will send your first draft to me for review in advance of the call.
How the Precision Target Marketing Session Works
This is a rather simple service where we work together to define and refine your target market and create a solid foundation for all the rest of your marketing efforts. It is a combination of marketing coaching and marketing writing services that helps you precisely identify a profitable, realistic target market whose members are looking to buy your services.
First You Buy the Service
If you still have questions and you’d like me to call you back, you can request me to contact you by using the contact form below. Once we’ve spoken and you’re ready to start, you pay for the service, and the process starts immediately.
Step One—You Prepare A Draft of Your Precise Target Market for Our First Phone Session
Once you buy, you immediately receive a response back that is a document to help you identify your target market. This template is based directly on Robert Middleton’s "Who We Work With" page in his Web Site Tool Kit (but goes much deeper to make it easier for you). You spend time answering the questions and dumping content into the template.
You can cut and paste existing content from your marketing materials or current web site. The questions on the template help you probe more deeply into your desired clientele and examine different perspectives on who you want to attract as clients.
- You take this material and write up a first draft of your target market.
- We set up our first appointment.
- You send the draft to me in plenty of time for me to review it before our call.
- I spend approximately 15 minutes reviewing your first draft.
Step Two—We Have Our First Phone Appointment (90 Minutes)
We work on your target market together by phone for 90 minutes. This call takes place on my conference line and is recorded.
- Starting with the information you’ve provided, we examine who you have been working with and who you really want to work with. This is an exciting session that often reveals new ideas, possibilities, combinations, and strategies. We always keep profitability in mind as we assess your target market definition. We’ll examine those segments of your market that will be easiest for you to win. Then, we explore any ways your choice of current market limits your business or makes marketing and sales difficult.
- While we work together on this information, you will hear me typing as we go so that I can capture the great content we come up with. I’ll get inspirations and type furiously as you speak, then ask you what you think of the writing. We’ll tweak the material as we go. It’s very much a synergistic series of iterations and evolution of ideas. I’ll ask you questions or offer suggestions or inquire about how you do things, or wonder if something else might work even better for you.
- We’ll be working to find that "sweet spot" in your market where you are thrilled and excited to work with those specific clients, and they’re ecstatic to find your solutions, AND your qualifications close the sale. We explore any ways your current target market has not been profitable and how that can be modified for better financial results. Then, we do "reality testing" on your target market and ensure that there is a market, that it’s viable, and that it has the potential of providing adequate revenue to your business.
- You receive copies of the notes I have typed during our session, along with the MP3. You can use these in any way you wish, but typically clients get a lot of ideas from reviewing this content, and it provides input for our final session.
Step Three—I Write the First Draft Of Your Target Market
Once we’ve finished this session, I write up a fully fleshed out description of your target market. This material is intended to be the bulk of the content for your "Who We Work With" web page and can also be excerpted in your business One Sheet (What Robert Middleton calls an Executive Summary) or other marketing materials. Note: I’ll be using the directions from Robert Middleton’s Web Site Tool Kit ("Who We Work With page) to put this document together for you. Typically, this takes two and a half hours of my writing time.
Step Four—You Get the First Draft, Decide on Changes, and We Schedule the Last Appointment
I send you my first draft and we schedule our next appointment. You look over the document and make notes on what works for you and what changes you require.
- You provide written specifics to me (using the Change Request Form) before our last session.
- You send them to me with enough time that I can consider them in advance.
- I review your requests (approximately 15 minutes).
Step Five—We Have Our Last Phone Appointment (One Hour)
We have our final one hour session where we work together over the phone again. You suggest the changes you want. I respond to that and offer suggested "fixes". We work collaboratively until we have a final product that you’re 100% satisfied with. I type up the changes as we work.
You receive:
- Notes (unedited) from our call.
- MP3 of our call.
Step Six—You Receive The Final Target Market Writing
I send you the completed work soon after we get off the phone. Usually, this is done quickly, but occasionally it might take me some additional time to smooth out the language. You end up with a clear, concise, viable, and profitable target market description—all ready for your web site and other marketing purposes.
Here’s What You Get In the Precision Target Market Service
